Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World, a new film by Director Werner Herzog, charts a winding course from the earliest days of what was once dubbed ‘The world-wide web’ to the more frightening implications of today. Namely, can we exist without the Internet? Would we want to? The screening of Lo and Behold resonates with New Media Gallery exhibition WITNESS, a collection of five international works that incorporate shifting levels of machine vision and recognition. The works explore the fragmented and interconnected nature of the vision process and the deeply coded, layered processes of recognition. They question how our interaction with technology has reconfigured notions of embodiment, public space, and the technologies themselves.

Two short talks will follow the screening. Adam Basanta is an award-winning composer, musician and installation artist who exhibits worldwide. His work spans visual and sound installations, experimental electronic music composition, site-specific interventions and laptop performance. Through a discussion of his work ‘A Truly Magical Moment' Basanta will muse on various levels of witnessing; personal, interconnected, disconnected, a type of re-enacted cinematic moment and the recursive, circularity and humour that can be described through each of these moments.

Mazdak Gharibnavaz is the Grassroots Development Officer at OpenMedia. A fervent believer in the power of the Internet in addressing the upcoming challenges of the 21st century, he initially joined OpenMedia as a volunteer, and shortly after as a staffer in the fight for a free and open Internet.

Earlier in the day, from 4:00 - 5:00pm, a workshop will be presented by the Momentum Festival. In 'Phoned Footage' Louisa Phung works with youth to create new media art.

MEDIATED VISIONS Partnering organizations include New Westminster New Media Gallery and the New West Film Fest (October 20th to 22nd 2016 at Landmark Cinema, New Westminster). DOXA is presented by The Documentary Media Society, a Vancouver-based non-profit, charitable society.
