Germinal Exhibition

We are delighted to welcome artist Marina Roy presenting an excerpted reading from her upcoming book on the appearance of the mythological Sasquatch in Northwest Coast BC, including her childhood home of Coquitlam. This reading is intended to offer alternative connections into the multiple meanings of hybrid creatures and languages in Germinal.

Big Foot. Sásq'ets. Sasquatch. A hominid-like hybrid; a bipedal creature inhabiting the forests of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Myths, stories and sightings perpetuate the appearance of the Sasquatch across languages and cultures. Sasquatch variously conjure the grotesque, the comical and the camp. Their presence underlines our fear of the unknown, merging the real with the imaginary.

Marina Roy's work is cross-disciplinary.  She investigates the intersection between materials, history, language, and ideology. The foundations of her research are in psychoanalysis, biopolitics, human-animal distinction, feminism, natural history, and linguistics.

New Media Gallery, in partnership with the City of New Westminster Cultural Services, presents the FRESH TALK series. FRESH TALK brings together artists, writers, poets, performers, scientists, critical thinkers and community members for interdisciplinary discussions related to the themes and concepts of New Media Gallery exhibitions. Fresh Talk is open to a broad audience and is intended to reflect the diversity of contemporary new media practices.

GERMINAL, the current exhibition from New Media Gallery, brings together 3 installations by 6 artists. “Germinal” refers to the earliest stage of development. From every germinal moment comes the potential to grow and become hybrid. The works in the exhibition incorporate hybrid creatures, hybrid words & hybrid languages.

Join us for an exciting talk, tour and discussion that will connect deeply with works by Germinal artists Nadia Hironaka + Matthew Suib, Laramascoto (Santiago Lara + Beatriz Coto) and Suhee Kim & Oliver Smith.
