Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda  interview  Santiago Lara + Beatriz Coto (Laramascoto)
Sunday, May 22, 2:00-3:00
Germinal Exhibition

We are delighted to welcome Gabriela Aceves Sepúlveda alongside a previously recorded SKYPE interview with Germinal artists Santiago Lara + Beatriz Coto (Madrid). Gabriela's talk will be conducted in Spanish and English.  All are welcome.

Beatriz and Santiago work as the collective Laramascoto.  This young, award-winning couple studied Fine Arts at the Universidad de Granada and the Universidada Computense de Madrid respectively. They have exhibited throughout Europe, winning the 'Premoi Joven JUST MAG' (Emerging Artists Prize) at Just Madrid and the Primer Premio in Arte40.  Their interactive media work in Germinal is entitled Animalium (La Pesadilla de Narcisso).

Gabriela is Assistant Professor at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University where she leads cMAS (criticalMediaArtsStudio). cMAs is an interdisciplinary research studio that focuses on interrogating how old and new technologies have and continue to shape both the historical narratives and practices of media arts through a decolonial and feminist perspective. As an interdisciplinary media artist she creates multimedia installations to explore the social, political, and cultural structures that shape our sense of self. She is a member of the Vancouver-based art collective AKA and sits on the board of VIVO Media Arts.

New Media Gallery presents the FRESH TALK series. FRESH TALK brings together artists, writers, poets, performers, scientists, critical thinkers and community members for interdisciplinary discussions related to the themes and concepts of New Media Gallery exhibitions. Fresh Talk is open to a broad audience and is intended to reflect the diversity of contemporary new media practices.

GERMINAL, the current exhibition from New Media Gallery, brings together 3 installations by 6 artists. “Germinal” refers to the earliest stage of development. From every germinal moment comes the potential to grow and become hybrid. The exhibition brings together works that touch on mythologies of hybridity, classifications of reproduction, the abject and complex systems.

Join us for an exciting talk, discussion and tour that connect deeply with works by Germinal artists Nadia Hironaka + Matthew Suib, Laramascoto (Santiago Lara + Beatriz Coto) and Suhee Kim & Oliver Smith.
