In 2019, British/Canadian experimental filmmaker and installation artist Chris Welsby was invited to present his 2 channel installation, Windvane (1972), in the 'winds' exhibition at New Media Gallery. The following documentary by filmmaker Flick Harrison, moves between Welsby speaking in the gallery about his work and practice...and sailing his catamaran in the Salish Sea near Ladysmith. As Welsby describes and demonstrates how sailing has informed his work, the film captures what film theorist Laura Mulvey has described as 'Welsby the weather artist'.

Born in the UK and now living on the west coast of Canada & in Mexico, Welsby is considered one of the pioneers of expanded cinema and moving image installation. He consistently explores the problematic relationship between humans, human technology and the natural world.
