Scratch is an open source program developed by the MIT Media Lab its used to make programming accessible to kids. Fearlessness, exploration and peer collaboration – you bet! In a small focussed classroom, the Scratch Steam teacher will guide your 7-9 year olds through all the fun and exciting ways in which to write code to produce sound, movement and stories.
Kids will document their reflections, questions and inspirations in a design journal further enhancing the process of learning. Throughout the series, examples will highlight how programming integrates into real life applications. This will be demonstrated through visiting the related New Media Gallery exhibition, or by the Scratch Steam Teacher showing things in the Learning Lab. Kids become part of a larger community by uploading creations to the MIT Scratch website.
For those who really love Scratch, it can also be downloaded for free for after the program finishes, so even more coding can be done at home!
